The mint mark on the 1936 buffalo nickel is located on the reverse of the coin, just below the “Five Cents” designation beneath the buffalo. The copper coins were struck in Denver (D), San Francisco (S) and Philadelphia (no mint mark).
More than 150 million buffalo nickels were minted in 1936, making it the most common of the series issued from 1913 to 1938. The majority of coins, a total of about 118,997,000, were struck at the Philadelphia mint. Denver struck 24,814,000 coins, while San Francisco struck 14,930,000 five-cent pieces. As of 2015, the value of the coins ranges from $0.46 to $23, depending on their condition and mint.
