Is a Mexican Driver’s License Valid in the United States?

David Clow/Other

The validity of a Mexican driver’s license in the United States depends on the state in which a person plans on driving, according to USA.gov. Visitors to the U.S. are advised to get an International Driving Permit before entering the U.S. since the U.S. won’t give the document to foreigners.

The IDP translates the information on a driver’s license into 10 languages, which can help authorities to read the license information. This document must be obtained in Mexico and is only valid for a specific amount of time. When planning a trip, contacting the driver’s license authority in each state a person will visit can help them to learn about special conditions, such as time limits on driving with a foreign license.
