Traditionally, hibiscus flowers represent delicate beauty, unity and peace. The hibiscus flower holds special meaning in many Asian countries and is also the national flower of Malaysia. The hibiscus has five petals that each represent a different quality and come together to represent ultimate peace.
In the Victorian era, flowers were often used by people to send messages, and each flower had its own special meaning. The hibiscus would be given to send the message that the giver thought the recipient was beautiful. Other flowers that are available in different color varieties often had a different meaning for each color. A red rose, for example, represents passionate love but a yellow one indicates a platonic friendship.
