What Is the Meaning of a Black Feather?

A black feather is often viewed as relating to negative energy, but that relationship can be a warning of negative energy to come or a protection against negative energy already in place. This color feather can also symbolize death but not in a literal sense. It can represent the closing of a finished chapter and the initiation of a new one that brings spiritual growth or wisdom.

Black feathers offer different meanings when they are mixed with other colors. A black feather mixed with white represents protection or union, while black mixed with white and blue signifies change on the horizon. Black mixed with purple represents a deep spirituality. A black feather can also indicate high mystical insight when it is iridescent. A black feather corresponds to the musical note C.

In their many forms, feathers are thought to be signs from the angels or as indications from nearby spiritual guides. These feathers can either be requested or appear by surprise, in which case they can also be seen as a sign of acknowledgement from departed loved ones and family members. In shamanic healing work, feathers are often used in meditation to divine meaning and to align oneself with the related energy.
