Maytag front-load washers perform slightly better than Whirlpool front-load washers and are more highly rated, according to Consumer Reports. However, both Maytag and Whirlpool washers are considered two of the best brands in the industry, as of March 2015.

The top-rated washer on the market is the Maytag Maxima. It washes a load of heavily soiled laundry in 45 minutes, the fastest performance among washers. It is also lauded for its low noise pollution, low water use and energy efficiency. Its PowerWash cycle removes stubborn stains, and the machine has a unique overnight wash-and-dry cycle that sucks moisture from clothing for a quicker drying time.

The Whirlpool Duet is rated just below the Maytag Maxima by Consumer Reports, although both machines come from the same manufacturing family and share many features. While the Whirlpool model scored well in performance, its is slightly behind Maytag when it comes to vibrations. Other sources consider the Whirlpool Duet one of the most efficient washing machines on the market, costing on average $27 a year to run. For instance, its Eco Boost feature lowers hot water use for more energy efficiency. Another feature, TumbleFresh, keeps the clothes spinning so that they don’t attract mildew before they can be switched over to the dryer.
