Whirlpool makes Maytag appliances as of 2015. In 2005, the Whirlpool Corporation bought out Maytag for more than $2.7 million in cash, debt and stock. Whirlpool is the nation's biggest appliance manufacturer.
Some believed that the government would not let Whirlpool to buy out Maytag, which was the third largest appliance manufacturer at the time. Jeff Fettig, the CEO of Whirlpool, was confident that the deal would get approval from government regulators. Whirlpool assumed Maytag's $977 million debt and bought the company at $21 a share. Maytag shareholders also received $10.50 per share from the buyout. Fettig believed that Whirlpool and Maytag could together build more efficient appliances and better serve their customer base.
