The job of a mayor is to be the official spokesperson for his city in all matters relating to government and the community. He ensures that the city fulfills its duties under the law and exercises its powers.
The mayor is often a presiding member of the city council and, in that capacity, helps determine city law. Among the duties of a mayor are the execution of official city documents and appointments. He also holds the ability to declare a local emergency when necessary. Mayors are generally elected to the office for a specific term set forth in the city bylaws and are usually eligible for re-election at the end of that term. As with many official positions, the mayor’s tenure is ultimately decided by the will of the people.
