California's DMV website states a person can take the driving permit test three times in one day. If the test is not passed after three times, there is a seven-day wait period before the person can retake it.
An appointment is needed to apply for a driving permit in California, and the test is given as part of the permit application process. A score of 38 out of 46 questions is needed to pass the written test. After passing the written permit test, the applicant must pay a fee of $33 to receive the permit. The driver's license application is good for 12 months after the application has been received, and the permit needs to be held for six months before the driver take the final driver's license test.
