How Many Shingles Are in a Square?

The most common type of shingles, known as strip or three-tab shingles, are packaged with three bundles per square. A typical bundle of three-tab shingles has 29 standard-sized shingles. A square of shingles covers 100 square feet of a standard roof.
Shingles are packaged in lightweight bundles, intended for easy transport up and down a ladder and across precarious heights. Laminated and heavier three-tab shingles therefore require four to five bundles to cover a square. For new roofs, underlayment must be applied before shingles are attached. Underlayment is typically packaged in rolls, with each roll containing four squares of material.
