More than 8 million refrigerators are sold in the United States each year, with almost all coming from five manufacturers. Typical refrigerators cost between $400 and $1,500, although some models with more-advanced features reach $3,000 or more, according to Energy Guide.

Refrigerators use about 14 percent of the energy consumed in an average home, falling just below heating and cooling. About 15 percent of U.S. homes have a second refrigerator as of 2014.

Smart refrigerators currently account for a small percent of the market but are increasing in popularity. Refrigerators with features such as touch screens or the ability to diagnose maintenance issues cost more than $3,600 as of 2013.
