Roughly 90 percent of the country’s edentulous population wears dentures. The edentulous population are those people who don’t have any teeth, and there are about 35 million edentulous people in the United States.
The dental specialty dealing with the construction of dentures is called prosthodontics and the dentists who make dentures are called prosthodontists.
Tooth loss is common in American adults and around 178 million adults are missing at least one tooth due to gum disease and tooth decay. People who lose a majority of their teeth often get dentures to prevent nutritional changes and to present a healthy smile. Close to 15 percent of those who wear dentures have a new set of dentures made each year.
