How Many International Soccer Teams Are There?
There are 234 international soccer teams; however, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, the governing body of soccer, only recognizes 207. FIFA’s showcase tournament, the World Cup, takes place every four years.
FIFA was established in 1904 as the need for an international governing body for soccer became apparent. Under FIFA, there are six confederations that oversee soccer in specific regions of the world: the Asian Football Confederation; the Confederation of African Football; the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football; the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol; the Oceania Football Confederation; and the Union of European Football Associations. Each confederation holds its own tournament to determine the best team in the region. The winners of these tournaments are invited to the FIFA-sanctioned Confederations Cup, traditionally held the year before the World Cup.
