How Many Grams Are in a Teaspoon of Sugar?

A single teaspoon of granulated sugar is equal to 4 grams. This does not include naturally occurring sugars that are found in fruit or dairy products.

Sugar is used in various forms, such as agave syrup, brown sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, evaporated cane juice, honey and maple syrup. The gram equivalent of these types of sweeteners may vary by the teaspoon. To calculate the number of grams these alternative sweeteners have, first determine the equivalent amount of granulated sugar in teaspoons. For example, 1 teaspoon of agave syrup is the same as 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar. This means that 1 teaspoon of agave nectar is equal to 8 grams.
