A cup of butter is equal to 227 grams, or 8 ounces. In the United States, butter is often measured in sticks, with a cup being equivalent to 2 sticks. A quick way to measure butter is to refer to the printed measurements on the wrapper of an unopened brick.
Soft butter is usually measured by pushing it into a dry measuring cup, compacting it and leveling the top with a rubber spatula. Hard butter with irregular shapes can be measured by using the water displacement method. Add a cup of water to a graduated measuring cup, then add the desired amount of butter. If half a cup is needed, then the water should rise up to the 1 1/2 cup mark. Afterward, pour out the water to get the measured butter.
