How Many Gang-Related Deaths Occur Each Year?
There are, on average, 2,000 gang-related homicides each year, according to 2007 through 2012 data from the National Youth Gang Center. Comparatively, there are around 15,500 murders in the United States each year.
Statistics show that about 67 percent of the 2,000 gang-related murders occur in large cities that have populations over 100,000. Only 17 percent of these homicides occurred in suburban areas. Large cities saw a 28 percent increase in gang-related deaths from 2011 until 2012, and in cities known to have a large gang population such as Los Angeles and Chicago, gang murders account for around half of all homicides each year.
In smaller cities and rural areas, of those that had known gangs, 75 percent reported no gang-related deaths in 2012.
