How Many Congressmen Are There?
There are 541 congressmen. This includes 100 senators and 435 members, five delegates and one resident commissioner in the House of Representatives. Sometimes, however, the word “congressman” is used only to refer to those in the House.
Each state sends two senators to Congress. The number of representatives each state has in the House of Representatives depends on the population of each state. Six states — Alaska, Delaware, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming — have only one representative in the House. California has the most with 53 representatives. The resident commissioner comes from Puerto Rico and the five delegates are from Washington, D.C., American Samoa, Guam, The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands.
