There are 13 clubs in a standard 52-card deck of playing cards. There are also 13 diamonds, 13 hearts and 13 spades.
By the late 14th century, playing cards were common throughout Europe. Early European designs featured swords, batons, cups and coins as the four card suits. By the 1480s, the French began producing card decks with hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds. By the 1590s, the French cards were the most common cards in circulation in Europe.
The number of cards in a deck used to vary from 48 to 56. However, by the late 15th century, the majority of card players agreed on playing with a 52-card deck.
