The leather from one cow hide yields 12 baseball gloves. Leather is one of the many biproducts that cows are used for in addition to providing meat. Sixty-five percent of a cow that weighs 1,000 pounds is used for beef, and 34 percent goes for by-products.
One cow hide also makes 144 baseballs, 12 basketballs, 20 footballs, 18 soccer balls or 18 volleyballs. Other by-products of cows include soap, the gelatin that is an ingredient in jello, marshmallows and gum, some film coatings and candles. Many medical products, such as first-aid creams, anti-rejection drugs and some types of insulin, are also by-products of beef cattle.
