How Do You Make Homemade PVA Glue?
PVA glue, or polyvinyl acetate, is also known as school glue or white glue. It can be made at home with ten ounces of water, three tablespoons white flour and one tablespoon of sugar.
Chill two ounces of water and mix in flour until smooth. Boil the remaining eight ounces of water. Once boiling stir in flour mixture over heat until thick while mixing constantly. Remove from heat and mix in sugar. Refrigerate until cool and the substance is ready to use as glue. This home made glue is as durable and strong as store bought school glue.
A popular brand of white glue in the United States is Elmer’s Glue-All. It’s predecessor, Casco glue, originally used casein, a milk protein, as a main ingredient. By 1947 all animal products were removed as ingredients in favor of PVA and Elmer’s Glue-All came into existence.
Another popular school supply that can be made at home with flour and water is play dough. Combine two cups of all purpose flour with half a cup of salt and two tablespoons of cream of tartar and two tablespoons of vegetable oil. Boil one and a half cups of water. Food color can be added to the boiling water and flour mixture if wanted. Add boiling water as needed to flour mixture while mixing constantly. A couple of drops of glycerine can be added for shine. Knead until the substance is no longer sticky.
