According to Dr. Randall Otterholt, DDS, Magic Swizzle, or “magic mouthwash,” is another name for a prescription mouthwash used to treat the mouth and esophagus. While some versions of magic mouthwash are commercially prepared, pharmacists must mix certain variations individually, states the Mayo Clinic.

The Mayo Clinic explains that magic mouthwash typically contains three of the following: an antibiotic, a local anesthetic or antihistamine, an antifungal, a corticosteroid for inflammation or an antacid to coat the mouth. The type of magic mouthwash prescribed is based on an individual’s specific condition, such as mouth sores caused by chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Research into the effectiveness of these medications is limited.
