The saying that provided the name for the M.R. Ducks bar in Ocean City, Md. is “M.R. ducks” with the response “M.R. not.” In the dialect of Maryland’s eastern shore, this is taken to mean “Them are ducks,” and “Them are not,” supposedly spoken by two duck hunters.
The bar got the name when the owner built it over the water, as he had envisioned many years before, but had no name for it. He remembered hearing the “M.R. ducks” conversation years before while duck hunting and decided to use the phrase for the bar’s name. M.R. Ducks is the only bar on a dock in Ocean City.
