What Do You Do If You Lose Your Driving Permit?

When a driving permit gets lost, the driver must go online or go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in the state where he or she received the driving permit to order a replacement. Replacement permits may require a small fee, unless it was stolen and a police report is on file.
Most states offer the ability to order a new permit online, but the mailing process can take up to 2 weeks. If the permit is needed in a timely manner, heading to a local DMV office will save much time in the replacement process. If ordering a replacement permit in an office, a birth certificate, Social Security card, passport and a statement affirming identity is required.
