How Long Should a Dryer Last?

A clothes dryer should last an average of 10 to 15 years, according to consumer products experts. The life of a dryer can be extended by regularly cleaning the lint screen and leaving the outside exhaust uncovered.
A dryer that takes more than 30 minutes to dry clothing may have a problem with its ventilation system. Lint can build up in exhaust pipes over time and increase the risk of fire.
About.com notes that keeping the interior of the dryer clean and drying appropriately sized loads can extend the life of the appliance and save energy. Occasionally vacuuming the vents on the back of the dryer can also keep the machine running more efficiently by letting air circulate properly.
