How Long Does It Take to Grill Salmon?

It takes between 8 and 10 minutes per inch of thickness to grill most types of fish, including salmon. The specific grilling time for salmon varies, based on the salmon's thickness, the temperature of the grill and the distance between the fish and the heat source.
Typically, salmon fillets take approximately 4 to 5 minutes to grill and should not be turned over during this process. Salmon steaks take roughly 4 to 7 minutes and should be turned once. A whole salmon should be cooked slowly at a low temperature.
Salmon should be monitored during the grilling process, so it doesn't overcook. Because fish does not retain heat well, it should be served immediately after grilling.
