According to the Medical University of South Carolina, life expectancy with cirrhosis of the liver depends on the degree of liver damage as well as the underlying cause. According to Patient.co.uk, life expectancy even in advanced cirrhosis ranges from one to 20 years depending on liver function and disease control.

The Medical University of South Carolina notes that some patients can have undetected cirrhosis for many years without any ill effects on their health. When complications, such as reduced blood flow to the liver, begin to occur, life expectancy begins to be affected.

According to Patient.co.uk, prognosis for liver cirrhosis is greatly affected by the cause of the disease process, such as alcohol abuse, hepatitis or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
