According to Med League Support Services, there is no general agreement among medical experts on how long a person can be intubated. However, according to the survey of US physicians presented by Fauquier ENT Consultants, 50 percent of physicians recommended a tracheostomy within the first 8 days.
According to UVA Health System, one of the factors that determine the length of intubation when weaning a patient is not possible is the reason for which the process is undertaken. Other factors that play a significant role in the decision-making process are the hospital policy, the patient’s condition and his response to the situation.
