In order to become a Canadian citizen, according to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, a person must have lived in the country for 1,095 days in the four years prior to applying. The process can take between 24 and 36 months, depending on the exact circumstances.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada also states that an applicant should already be a resident, be of 18 years of age, speak English or French, be knowledgeable about Canada and not have any outstanding deportation orders or arrest warrants. As a final step to becoming a Canadian citizen, an applicant has to attend a ceremony and take an oath of citizenship.
