How Long After a Refrigerator Has Been Moved Can It Be Plugged In?
If the refrigerator was moved upright, there is no need to wait before plugging it in again. However, if the refrigerator is laid on its side to move, a wait of 24 hours after the refrigerator is turned back upright is required to plug it in. Always lay a refrigerator on its side opposite the hinges, not on its front or back.
If moving a side-by-side refrigerator and freezer, place the refrigerator on the freezer side as this door is more unlikely to open. Compact model refrigerators should always be kept upright when moving, as the drain water can run back into the refrigerator. If a compact model must be moved on its side, be sure to unplug it at least 24 hours in advance to allow it to drain.
If possible when moving a refrigerator, keep it upright. Turn a refrigerator off at least two hours before transport to allow for defrosting. Use a dolly to transport the refrigerator, and cover it with a blanket to protect its surface. If laying a refrigerator on its side for brief servicing or cleaning, turn it upright when you’re done, and wait the same amount of time as it spent on its side before plugging it back in.
