How Long After Getting a Perm Is It Okay to Get Your Hair Wet?

Hair care experts recommend not getting the hair wet for 48 to 72 hours after getting a perm. After the waiting period, experts say not to brush or pull the hair straight when combing, but people should instead use a wide tooth comb or pick to gently untangle recently permed hair.

After getting the hair permed, it is important to avoid getting it wet for 48 to 72 hours. This includes washing it, swimming and getting caught in the rain. Additional after-perm care includes using an ammonium-based shampoo and conditioner that is designed to be gentle on permed hair. Towel drying is recommended over blow drying. However, if blow drying is necessary a diffuser should be used. Scrunching curls as the hair dries helps keep the perm’s shape. If detangling is necessary, people should use a wide tooth comb or a pick.
