How Do You Keep Fleas Off of Humans?

Eliminating fleas in the environment is an effective way to keep fleas from biting humans. Products that eliminate flea infestations, such as food-grade diatomaceous earth, can be used along with deterrents that keep the fleas away from humans.

To keep fleas away from the people living in the home, mix seven drops of eucalyptus, tea tree, rosemary, citronella and peppermint oil in a cup of water. Shake the mixture well before use, and use the combination to spray exposed skin, bedding, clothing and dogs. Cats should not be exposed to essential oils, particularly tea tree oil, and the spray should be used sparingly on children. It is necessary to eliminate the flea infestation completely to prevent fleas from biting humans.

If fleas are present on a pet, wash the pet’s bedding in hot water, and then dry it on high heat for at least 30 minutes. Place the cleaned bedding in a heavy garbage bag until the rest of the home has been treated. To treat carpeting, sprinkle a generous amount of food-grade diatomaceous earth in each room. The diatomaceous earth should be placed under furnishings and in other hidden areas to eliminate the infestation completely.

Infestations that are not eliminated with diatomaceous earth treatments should be treated with a commercial fogger or spray. Use the product according to the directions on the packaging, and wash all human and pet bedding after the treatment.
