The origins of cricket are not fully known, but games similar to cricket have been played in Kent as far back as 1300, as documented in the household accounts of King Edward I. The first recorded match of cricket was played in Kent in 1646, and the first description of a cricket game comes from 1706.
The rules of cricket were written for the first time in 1744, and the world’s first cricket club was formed in 1760 in Hambledon. The game as it is known today began in 1770 after bowlers started to throw the ball through the air rather than rolling it along the ground. The ball’s weight was limited to slightly more than 5 ounces and the width of the bat was set to 4 inches.
