What Are the Ingredients in a McDonald’s Fish Sandwich?

The ingredients in a McDonald’s fish sandwich include a breaded pollock fish patty, a steamed bun, tartar sauce and a slice of processed American cheese. The sandwich is also known as the Filet-O-Fish.

McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish is made with wild-caught Alaska pollock breaded in wheat flour colored with paprika and turmeric extract. The breaded fish patty is deep-fried in vegetable oil. The regular bun is made with enriched bleached flour. The tartar sauce contains soybean oil, pickle relish, egg yolks, onions, vinegar, sugar and spice. The pasteurized processed American cheese slice contains milk, cream, cheese culture, citric acid, natural flavor and added color.

In 2013 McDonald’s USA became the first national fast-food restaurant chain to use sustainable fish certified by the Marine Stewardship Council. All McDonald’s fish products bear the council’s eco-label.

A McDonald’s franchise owner in Ohio created the first fish sandwich for his predominantly Catholic customers, who wanted an alternative to meat on Fridays. McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc had created his own meatless burger with grilled pineapple and cheese on a bun, called the Hula Burger. On Good Friday 1962, both sandwiches were put on the menu as a test. Six Hula Burgers were sold versus 350 fish sandwiches. As of 2013, McDonald’s sells 300 million Filet-O-Fish sandwiches every year.
