Ibuprofen is derived from propionic acid. It is a white powder that is made into pill form for oral administration. Other inactive ingredients in ibuprofen pills include polydextrose, titanium dioxide, colloidal silicon dioxide and hypromellose.

In most cases, ibuprofen is used as an anti-inflammatory medication. It works to reduce the hormones that are responsible for causing pain or inflammation in a person’s body. Ibuprofen is available in three different tablet sizes: 400 milligrams, 600 milligrams and 800 milligrams. Smaller doses of ibuprofen can be purchased over the counter at drugstores and grocery stores, while the 800-milligram dosage often requires a prescription.
