What Are the Ingredients in Coca-Cola?
The present formula for Coca-Cola includes carbonated water, sugar, color, phosphoric acid and natural flavors that include caffeine. The exact formula is proprietary, but the original recipe has been publicly published.
Coca-Cola was first made in 1886 by John Pemberton. The formula was published in a book by Pemberton’s commercial partner, Frank Robinson, and was printed in a 1979 Atlanta newspaper article. The original formula includes sugar, water, lime juice, citric acid, caffeine, coloring agents and coca. The beverage gained its flavor from a combination of spices, including nutmeg and nutmeg oil, vanilla, lemon oil, cinnamon oil, coriander oil, neroli oil and alcohol.
Today’s beverage gains its brown color from caramel coloring agents. However, the formula has been modified due to concerns about carcinogens.
