What Is the Height of a Coat Closet Rod?

Coat closet rods designed to hold coats or dresses should be 66 to 69 inches above the ground. When double-hanging a closet, with two rods hung one over the other, the lower rod should be 42 inches off the floor, with the higher rod 36 to 42 inches above that.

Rods should be hung 21 to 24 inches away from the back wall of the closet so clothes have enough depth in which to hang. Children’s closets can be double-hung with the lower rod starting at 29 inches off the ground. Each garment should be allotted 1 to 2 1/2 inches of space on the rod.
