What Is Hades’ Family Tree?
Hades, the Greek god of the Underworld, is the son of Cronus and Rhea. His brothers are Zeus, the leader of the Olympians, and Poseidon, the god of the sea. His sisters are Hera, Zeus’s wife and goddess of marriage and family, Demeter, goddess of agriculture, and Hestia, the goddess of home and family.
Hades kidnapped his niece Persephone, who was the daughter of his brother Zeus and sister Demeter, and took her to the Underworld. There, he bound her by tricking her into eating pomegranate seeds, and she became his wife and queen of the Underworld. Hades’s children are The Furies, Dionysus and Makaria. The Furies are three goddess sisters who represent the various types of vengeance: anger, grudging and avenging. Dionysus is the god of wine and ecstasy. Makaria is the goddess of death. Cronus and Rhea, Hades’s parents, were among the primordial gods known as the Titans. They are the parents of the Olympian gods. Although Hades is the god of the Underworld, he is not the god of Death. Rather, he rules the realm where souls whose bodies have received a proper burial cross into. Without a proper burial, however, souls are not permitted to cross into Hades’s Underworld.
