Is Greek Yogurt Considered Dairy?

Greek yogurt is a dairy product made from milk and the addition of a bacterial culture. However, in the making of Greek yogurt the whey is strained from it. The process of making regular yogurt does not involve this step.

Some benefits of straining the whey from Greek yogurt are that it will contain less sugar, is lower in carbohydrates and has more protein than regular yogurt. In six ounces of Greek yogurt, there are between 15 to 20 grams of protein. However, Greek yogurt can be high in saturated fats. For this reason, it may be beneficial to buy low-fat or fat-free Greek yogurt.

People who are lactose intolerant may have an easier time digesting Greek yogurt because a lot of the lactose is removed during the straining process. Lactose intolerance is a condition in which people cannot have dairy products because it causes gastrointestinal problems.
