A grape is a type of berry and not a citrus fruit. Grapes grow on deciduous woody vines, while citrus fruits are produced by flowering plants in the rue family.
There are more than 8,000 varieties and 60 species of grapes, and grape colors include green, black, red, purple and yellow. Like blueberries, grapes have leathery skins and fleshy insides. Citrus fruits, such as grapefruit, oranges, lemons and limes, typically have textured peels that produce an oil with a distinct pleasant-smelling aroma when squeezed. Spanish explorers introduced grapes to America, and Concord grapes were developed in Massachusetts. Raisins and currants are dried grapes.
