What Is a Good Batting Average in Baseball?
Last Updated Apr 18, 2020 8:23:57 PM ET
Typically, a good batting average in baseball is an average above .300. Batting between .250 and .300 is typically considered average, while anyone hitting below .250 is generally having a bad season. Ultimately, the quality of a baseball batting average depends on the playing level.
Batting average is calculated by dividing the total amount of hits by the total number of at-bats, not counting walks. There are other stats aside from batting average that indicate a player's success during a baseball season, including slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Analysts tend to consider a range of game stats before qualifying a player's season.
