Generation Y individuals have a birth range starting in the year 1982. According to a demographic study by Strauss and Howe, the generation ends in the birth year 2004; however, the New York Times, along with other publications set the final birth year as 1995 in their articles.

Generation Y has also been called the Echo Boom generation by publications such as the New York Times because of their high birth rate and closeness to their Baby Boom parents. According to Strauss and Howe, they have also been referred to as the Millennial Generation due to their close connection with the year 2000 and their coming of age in the new technologically driven computer age.
