What Does a Gecko Tattoo Symbolize?
The gecko tattoo represents many different ideas in different cultures. It can represent fear and power, mobility and flexibility or protection against bad luck and bad omens.
The gecko makes its main appearance in Polynesian art. In Polynesian culture, lizards and geckos are thought to represent the gods and the ancestors of man. They are believed to be able to communicate with the gods and bring fortune to its owner, as well as bad luck to its owner’s enemies. In a branch of Polynesian culture called Maori, the gecko protects against illness and other negative forces. On a less positive note, the gecko can represent bad luck and bad omens, especially in the cultures of the Pacific.
In general, the gecko can symbolize longevity, because their species have existed long into history. The species can also symbolize mobility, flexibility, agility, intelligence and fertility. They can also represent autonomy and renewal, because in emergency situations, they cut off their own tail to avoid being caught by predators, then grow it back later when they are safe.
Lizard tattoos can be located on many parts of the body. For women, they usually appear on the lower back, stomach, or ankles. For men, they appear larger on the arms or back.
