What Fruits Can You Eat With Type 2 Diabetes?
Those with type 2 diabetes can eat many different kinds of fruits, including apples, berries, bananas, figs and watermelon, the American Diabetes Association advises. Most fruits have a low glycemic index, meaning they don’t raise blood sugar very much, making them a good alternative to other carbohydrates.
Most fruits are appropriate for a diabetic diet as long as serving sizes are observed, according to the American Diabetes Association. For instance, a person with type 2 is advised to limit watermelon, blueberry, strawberry, cantaloupe, grape and cherry amounts to between 3/4 and 1 cup. Individuals with diabetes can eat small whole fruits such as apples, oranges, peaches and pears. Frozen and canned fruit are also acceptable up to 1/2 cup. Dried fruit such as raisins should be eaten sparingly at a maximum of 2 tablespoons per meal.
While fresh fruit is one of the best choices for a person with diabetes, other fruit-based foods are also allowed, states WebMD. Applesauce, jam or preserves, and canned fruit are good additions to a diet as long as they are free from added sugar. Diabetics need to avoid fruit canned in sugar syrup, fruit rolls and fruit drinks that are made with anything but 100 percent fruit juice.
