What Are the Four Main Purposes of Government?

The purposes of government include maintenance of a social order, providing public services, providing national protection and making national economic decisions. Generally, governments arise from an ideology of sovereignty of a region, a common identity of people living there.

Social order is implemented differently based on a wide variety of socioeconomic ideologies. They usually possess laws to protect citizens and consequences for breaking those laws. Public services such as transportation, education, hospitals and public welfare help improve the population materially. These improvements must be safeguarded from external and internal threats to the government, and they are protected by a national military. Government economic policies serve to strengthen a nation’s currency, trade leverage and global financial power.
