What Foods Should You Avoid If You Have Sarcoidosis?
People with sarcoidosis should avoid eating refined foods such as white bread, sugar and pasta, as well as caffeine, alcohol and trans fats commonly found in foods such as donuts, cookies and crackers, according to University of Maryland Medical Center. Sarcoidosis sufferers should also decrease consumption of red meats.
Tips for a healthy sarcoidosis diet include drinking six to eight glasses of water per day, eating foods that are rich in antioxidants, and eating foods that are high in magnesium and calcium, states University of Maryland Medical Center. Foods rich in antioxidants include blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, squash and peppers. Magnesium and calcium rich foods include brown rice, avocados, barley, bran and bananas.
Some supplements and herbs are also thought to improve overall health for people with sarcoidosis, explains University of Maryland Medical Center. For instance, using fish oil or omega-3 fatty acids can help relieve inflammation in the body. Salmon and halibut are good dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
Bromelain may also help reduce inflammation, at a 500 milligram dose per day. Mutivitamins, probiotics, cat’s claw and turmeric may also be helpful for sarcoidosis. Always check with a physician before taking any supplement or herb, as interactions with medications or issues with blood clotting can occur in some people.
