What Are Some Foods That Do Not Contain Sugar?

Most foods such as vegetables, meat and dairy in their natural state do not contain sugar. Fruits have natural sugars, but berries have the lowest sugar count.

Unprocessed meat, such as beef, chicken, pork, turkey or lamb, do not contain sugar. Fish, such as salmon, tuna and shellfish, are also free of sugar. Processed meats, such as bacon, cured ham and sausage, sometimes contain sugar as a preservative.

Non-starchy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, onions, cucumbers and mushrooms, have very little natural fructose and no added sugar. Cauliflower, bell pepper, bok choy, broccoli and asparagus are also on this list. Potatoes and winter squashes are starchy and higher in natural sugar content.

Natural dairy foods such as low-fat milk and unflavored yogurt are sugar-free, though lactose converts to sugar in the body. Flavored milks and yogurts typically contain sugar. Unsweetened almond and soy milks don’t contain sugar, though flavored varieties do. Eggs, hard cheese, cottage cheese and tofu also don’t contain sugar.

Fresh or roasted nuts are sugar-free. These include almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, peanuts and macadamia nuts. However, flavored varieties such a honey roasted contain sugar. Plain nut butter doesn’t contain sugar, but some varieties of packaged peanut butter do.

Foods labeled sugar-free don’t contain sugar. These include diet soda, sugar-free desserts and no-calorie drink mixes. Coffee and tea are naturally without sugar.
