What Is FOID Card Status?
A FOID card status refers to the validity of an Illinois firearm owners identification card, according to the Illinois State Police. Card statuses may be waiting for approval, valid, denied or expired. FOID cards must be renewed every 10 years.
The FOID Act of 1968 first required firearms owners in Illinois to carry the cards as identification for purchasing guns and ammunition, according to the Illinois State Police. Some exemptions apply, but no firearms or ammunition are to be bought or possessed by anyone without a FOID card. Illinois residents must submit an application and pay a $10 fee to obtain a card. Convicted felons must go through an appeals process to obtain a card. People whose FOID cards are more than six months expired are not permitted to possess or purchase firearms or ammunition.
