The five types of mass media are print, radio, regular broadcast television, cable television and telecommunications, such as the Internet or satellite services. Mass media is defined as a type of communication that uses technology to simultaneously reach a wide audience.

Mass media is primarily a one-way form of communication, with the audience having limited or no means to respond to the information it receives. Additionally, mass media focuses on broad messages that have widespread appeal to gain the largest possible audience, as opposed to local or alternative media that focus on regional or specialized messages. In many ways, the Internet is has shattered the definition of mass media with audiences flocking to specialized publications and news sources.
