What Is the First Step in the Army’s CRM?

The first step in the Army’s composite risk management (CRM) process is to identify hazards. This helps determine the risk involved and the most effective way to determine controls to reduce or eliminate hazards.

The CRM process is designed to increase mission effectiveness, control loss of personnel and equipment and reduce the impact of hazards during missions. Previous risk management controls focused on accidental risk and tactical risks. The Army has changed this process to focus on risk and loss, no matter what the situation is. The CRM worksheet covers a wide array of potential hazards, such as weather conditions, surface conditions and experience of personnel.
