The ignition firing order for a 454ci Chevrolet is 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2. From the front of the engine, the odd cylinders are on the right side, with cylinder 1 being the closest. The even-numbered cylinders are on the left, starting with cylinder 2.
To ensure proper routing of spark plug wires, make sure the cylinder 1 piston, on the front driver side, is at top dead center, which is the highest point in its cylinder. The rotor inside the distributor cap is then pointing to the spark plug terminal for cylinder 1. The remaining wires are attached around the distributor in either a clockwise or counterclockwise order depending on the rotation of the rotor, then to the spark plugs in the proper firing order.
