What Is a Fencing Sword Called?
There are three types of fencing weapons, each with its own rules and strategies. These weapons are called the foil, the épée and the sabre.
The foil is a lightweight weapon used for thrusting. Points with the foil are scored only by getting touches with the tip of the sword, within the valid target body areas. The épée is another thrusting weapon, but it is heavier than the foil. With the épée, the entire body is a valid target area, and points are still only scored with the tip of the sword. The sabre is a light cutting weapon, with which points are scored either with the side or tip of the blade. However, the sabre also incorporates a specific target area. All three weapons feature hand guards to protect from injuries.
